Japanese Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Minister Tsutomu Takebe will instruct the National Federation of Agricultural Cooperative Associations (Zen-Noh) to impose strict punishments on those involved in a mislabelling scandal at Toda, Saitama Prefecture-based Zen-Noh Chicken Foods, a Zen-Noh affiliate.

Speaking yesterday [Wednesday] at a ministry panel established to supervise operational reforms at The JA (Japan Agricultural Cooperative) group, Takebe said: “The JA group, including Zen-Noh, has problems managing its operations.”

Such labelling violations “not only betray consumers’ faith in domestic agricultural products but also cripple farmers’ serious efforts (on production),” he added.

Takebe said he will demand that Zen-Noh conducts a thorough check of its whole operation and strengthen the procedures to ensure that laws and ordinances are followed.
