Tokyo-based Chisso Corporation has announced that its natural food additive Polylysine has recently acquired certification by the US Food and Drug Administration.

To be marketed under the trade name Save-ory in the US for the first time, Polylysine has been used in Japan and South Korea as a food preservative since 1990. It will also be marketed in the EU.

The company claims the naturally occurring ingredient, produced by the same microbial fermentation that creates miso, is effective against the spread of microorganisms such as E. coli and Salmonella.

Japan’s food industry uses it widely to extend the shelf life of various foodstuffs including sauces, baked products and fresh foods.
