Little Moons, a UK-based desserts business, has spent GBP3.5m (US$4.5m) on a new facility to meet increasing demand for its mochi ice cream balls.

Founded in 2010 by brothers and sisters Howard and Vivien Wong, Little Moons said it has built the new factory in Park Royal, London, amid rising consumer appetite for its mochi, the company’s debut product, and Cookie Dough Ice Cream Bites, both domestically and internationally.

A spokesperson for the business told just-food the existing plant in Neasden, London, will be retained and that Little Moons export markets currently include European countries and the Middle East.

The company said the new plant will increase production “four-fold” and enable the business to expand in the gluten-free and vegan segment as part of a new strategy. Over the next “few years” Little Moons hopes the new factory will lead to the creation of 150 more jobs, from graduate level to more senior positions.

The spokesperson confirmed Little Moons currently employs 50 staff, which will rise to 100 with the new factory on board, and 150 once production is fully scaled up at the plant.

Howard Wong commented: “The world has embraced the mochi and more recently our Cookie Dough Ice Cream Bites. Our expansion reflects the increasing demand for mochi’s from both retailers and trade, and will enable us to accelerate innovation, which is super exciting.”

Little Moons’ mochi are available in 12 different flavours – two of which are vegan – while it currently offers two varieties of Cookie Dough Ice Cream Bites, which are stocked in Tesco, Ocado, Waitrose, and Wholefoods.

Vivien Wong added: “When you start a food business, the first thing people tell you is out source production. Well we didn’t and it was a great decision as we have full control over the innovation process, quality control and flexibility. We have a highly-skilled team and we are looking forward to bringing on more local talent to continue developing our wonderful products for the world to enjoy.”
