Malaysia’s agriculture and agro-based industries minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has declared the country free of bird flu.

There have been no new cases of the potentially fatal H5N1 avian influenza in an animal since late November last year.

In view of the threat of the virus re-entering Malaysia from nearby markets, the ban on imports of chickens, ducks and eggs from Thailand and other countries affected by bird flu will remain in place, as will ongoing monitoring and enforcement work.
