The Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs Ministry has been asked by the Pahang Consumers Association to investigate allegations that three companies importing and distributing “a popular brand” of baby milk powder are short-changing consumers.

According to secretary of the consumers association, Saiful Abdullah, new packaging means that while prices have stayed the same, the weight of the product has dropped by 10%. In some cases, distributors are even using tins that are the same size as previous packaging, but the contents have shrunk.

“This is done to deceive the consumers and the authorities. Instead of raising prices which will make it very obvious, they have opted to reduce the contents to avoid detection,” said Abdullah, adding that this was cheating and that the ministry should introduce regulation to standardise the size of milk powder containers.

Furthermore, concern has been raised that because it is a popular brand that is involved, consumers outside Pahang are also likely to be affected.
