Nestle has launched a Gerber-branded line of infant formula in the US containing probiotics, which it said “may provide support to the development of a healthy digestive and immune system” in babies.

The formula, sold under the Gerber Good Start sub-brand, is being offered as three different products: a “stage 1” formula with a blend of DHA, prebiotics and probiotics; a “stage 2” formula containing probiotics; and a “stage 3” line aimed at toddlers.

“At Gerber, we are always looking for ways to improve our products and ensure we are offering the best nutrition possible,” Gerber chief marketing officer Aileen Stocks said. “By adding probiotics similar to those found in breastmilk to all our milk-based powder infant formulas, we are able to help support baby’s developing digestive system and a healthy immune system.”

Nestle has conducted research to determine how probiotics, good bacteria of the type commonly found in breastmilk, “may provide support to the development of a healthy digestive and immune system in babies and young children”. Based on the research, as well as academic and scientific studies, the company moved ahead with he development of the product.
