Turnover at the US supermarket outlets of Dutch retailing giant Ahold has risen in the wake of the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, the company revealed yesterday.

More than 60% of Ahold’s sales are generated in the US, and the company attributes the increase in spending to a move by consumers to hoard food stocks, according to Dutch newspaper Het Financieele Dagblad.

Turnover at Ahold’s food services division has fallen slightly however. More than 50% of revenue from this business is driven by Ahold’s hotel and restaurants operations, and a spokesman for the company explained that since the attacks, Americans are more likely to stay at home rather than eat out.
