Bob’s Red Mill rolls out grain-free baking mixes

Bob’s Red Mill, a US-based gluten-free baking business, has launched four grain-free varieties made with plant ingredients.

The Grain Free Baking Mixes incorporate organic coconut sugar and almond, and flours sourced from coconut and cassava. They are non-GMO, paleo-friendly and gluten-free.

The line-up features Chocolate Cake, Brownies, Blueberry Muffins and Flatbread, the latter being suitable for pizza crusts and savoury applications.

The mixes are available online through the Bob’s Red Mill website and also Amazon in a price range of US$3.99 to $6.49, with an expected launch in US retailers over the autumn and winter.

Beyond Meat chooses China to debut ‘pork’ mince

Beyond Meat has chosen China to launch its newest plant-based product, ‘pork mince’.

Beyond Pork has been developed by the US meat-free firm’s teams in Los Angeles and Shanghai and has been rolled out this month in select Chinese restaurants – Egg, Moménti, RAC, Solo X, and Tun Wang – until 24 November.

just-food is checking with the company what the future plans for the pork mince are in China beyond November, and also for other geographical markets.

The Nasdaq-listed company entered the Chinese market last spring in a deal with coffee chain Starbucks to incorporate its Beyond Mince (beef) in dishes, and in July rolled out its meat-free burgers and sausages in retail e-commerce. It has also been in discussions to set up a manufacturing base in China.

Beyond Meat said the pork mince has been “created specifically for the Chinese market” because pork is the “most popular meat” consumed in the country.

Candy Chan, the general manager for China at Beyond Meat, said: “We’re excited to launch Beyond Pork in China, marking a milestone for Beyond Meat. Beyond Pork’s exclusive debut in China furthers Beyond Meat’s commitment to this important market and its vision for plant-based meat to continue winning the hearts (and mouths) of Chinese consumers.”

Gerber hits frozen aisle in US

Gerber, the US-based infant nutrition business owned by Nestlé, has entered the frozen aisle in the US.

Described as a “premium, organic, simple-ingredient line of foods made with veggies and whole grains,” Freshful Start bowls come in three varieties – Tomato Basil, Mac & Cheese and Southwest Style – and are designed for toddlers 12 months and up. 

Freshful Start also offers two varieties of veggie bites: Yellow Carrot, Kale, Lentil & Quinoa; and Broccoli, Lentils & Cheddar. 

Dr. Erin Quann, head of medical affairs at Gerber/Nestlé Nutrition, said: “Families with busy schedules are looking for quick meal options for toddlers that provide the nutrition their growing bodies need. Parents can take comfort knowing Gerber Organic Freshful Start bowls and bites are nutritious mealtime options for toddlers.” 

Gerber’s Freshful Start Bowls and Bites are available in select Target stores.

Mondelez creates Chips Ahoy/Oreo hybrid in Spain

US confectionery giant Mondelez International has brought two of its best known biscuit products together in the Spanish market.

The Chips Ahoy Extra Oreo Creme biscuit is an addition to the Chips Ahoy Extra cookies range. Mondelez said the introduction of an Oreo Creme variant will “allow the brand to strengthen ties and connect with young consumers”.

Esther Baldó, brand manager of Chips Ahoy, said: “Chips Ahoy Extra Oreo Creme is an irresistible and creamy pairing, and we are confident that it will triumph among consumers. To the popularity of Chips Ahoy we now add the unmistakable u of Oreo, a product that adds value to everything it touches.”

The Chips Ahoy cookie brand was created in the US in 1964 and has been sold in Spain since the 1980s. 

UK’s Soupologie launches better-for-you snack pots

UK healthy soup maker Soupologie has moved into a new category with the launch of snack pots under a new sub-brand – Foodologie.

Two new product ranges have been unveiled – Oh Snack Pots and Plant Pots. Soupologie said the latter contains the full five portions of the recommended five-a-day fruit and veg servings.

The eight strong range will roll out across 450 Tesco stores from 23 November. Plant Pots have a RRP of GBP2.40 (US$3.18) while the Oh Snack Pots have a RRP of GBP1.70.

Plant Pot flavours are Greek Style Briami, Bountiful Burrito Bowl, Super-Charged Chilli Verde, Lentil & Turmeric Daal and Roasted Roots with Curly Kale. They are vegan, low fat,  gluten-free and “packed with” protein and fibre.   

Oh Snack Pots come in three flavours – Yunnah Noodles with Kimchi, Carrot Bourguignon and Jambalaya – and are vegan, fat-free and gluten-free.
