MORE than 1,300 farmers in the US and Canada have become members of an association, which wants to raise the market price of grain by encouraging farmers not to grow wheat for a year.

Focus on Sabbatical was founded last year by Ken Goudy, a 30-year veteran of the farm chemical business in western Canada. “We believe that by taking 8 billion bushels out of production in a given year in the US and Canada, we can shock the world market price of grain back to a reasonable level. An 8 billion bushel sabbatical would increase the price by 100%,” he explained.
