BSE is not a major risk in Poland, according to national health inspector Pawel Policzkiewicz. Speaking at a press conference, he revealed that the government ban on beef imports from 12 countries affected by mad cow disease was designed to ensure that the risks stay at a minimum.

He added that over the last three months, inspectors have carried out examinations of over 40,000 food retail outlets to check that beef material from these countries is not reaching the shelves. Farmers who use vaccines on their livestock are also required to achieve a certificate of quality.
