Puerto Rico-based Packers Provision is recalling around 420lbs of frozen beef trim due to possible contamination with E. coli, the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today (13 October).

The frozen beef trim products were produced on 19 August and were exported to the US and then sent to distributors and establishments in Puerto Rico. These products were sent to establishments for further processing and will likely not bear the establishment number “Nicaragua 4” on products available for direct consumer purchase.

The products subject to recall are 60lb bulk boxes of ‘BM-95 Boneless Beef’, each with establishment number ‘Nicaragua 4’ printed on the packet. The shipping label bears the item number 00003 and pack date of 19 August 2008.

The problem was discovered through FSIS microbiological sampling of imported product from a foreign establishment that was then sent to multiple importers of record in the US.

When contacted by just-food today (13 October), Packers Provision said it had received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of the product.
