Carrefour has signed a franchise agreement with Romanian supermarket operator Gulliver, which has seen the opening of two stores in the country under the retail giant’s Express banner.

The French retailer has a target of opening 27 Express stores in Romania through the franchise contract. It operates three store formats in the country, with a total of 119 stores Carrefour hypermarkets, Market supermarkets and Express outlets.

Gulliver operates nine stores in Bucharest, all of which will eventually go under the Express banner.

In August last year, Carrefour expanded its store network in Romania through a deal with retailer Aliment Murfatlar. The agreement was for the lease of six stores located in Constanta, on the country’s Black Sea coast.
