Following the recent cases of BSE in Dutch herds, Russia is the only country still importing beef from The Netherlands. Problems were encountered this week however after the latest consignment of 7,000 tonnes of beef was rejected by customs officials after it was revealed that the origin of the meat could not be guaranteed.

Dutch beef sector organisation COV admitted, “the consignment is a mixture of German and Dutch beef.”

The consignment is now likely to be destroyed, a move that will cost the beef sector around US$12.5m.
