Spar South Africa has confirmed it is in talks with an international partner to enter Angola.
A spokesperson for the retailer told just-food today (29 August) it is in discussions with a partner that has a presence in the country to develop a Spar branded store in Angola.
“The store will be owned by our partner and Spar SA’s involvement will initially be to provide assistance with the design and development of the store, to supply selected product from South Africa by way of exports to Angola, and to assist with the development of a supply chain network into that country.”
The spokesperson said the first store will be a pilot in order to “gain a better understanding of the trading market, consumer demands and expectations, and fundamentally the profitability of the initiative”.
Spar will not have any formal interest in the business, but the spokesperson said it will stand to gain from increased export revenues.
“The roll-out of further stores will be wholly dependent upon the success of this initial venture but we are both quietly confident about opportunities in Angola. We would not like to make further comment at this early stage in the project, but will issue a statement when the store opens and more detail can be made available.”
