Slovenian retailer Mercator today announced (4 January) it has acquired its franchisee Vesna.

Vesna operates seven franchised retailers in north-eastern Slovenia. Mercator’s acquisition, which is still subject to conditions, was assessed by financial advisor KPMG. A figure for the sale was not disclosed.

Croatian rival Agrokor is attempting to buy a majority stake in Mercator but negotiations have repeatedly come to a standstill.

Last month, the Nova Ljubljanska Banka (NLB), a bank which is one of 12 parties looking to sell their combined stake, announced a halt to proceedings over the as-yet unexplained departure of CEO Bozo Jasovic.

In November, Mercator’s management refused to support talks to sell the stake to Agrokor, citing concerns over third-party involvement.
