Spanish fishermen have been granted an addition €30m (US$30.9m) in European Union aid to help their recovery from the Prestige oil spill disaster.

The European Commission said it was concerned that aid should reach those directly engaged in fish and shellfish farming, and not just vessel-owners.

The proposed aid would help in the replacement of vessels, plant and stocks and assist in the cleaning, repair and reconstruction of fish farming locations. The new money is on top of a grant of €80m made to Spain under the EU programme for the re-orientation of the fishing industry.
