Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona has revealed a 34% increase in year-on-year turnover for 2001, to €4.52bn (US$4.03bn).


During the course of 2001, the Valencia-based chain invested €180m in the expansion of its store portfolio from 493 to 590 outlets.


Today [Thursday] Mercadona will open a new logistics centre. Situated in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia, near Barcelona, it will service around 250 supermarkets in the northern and north-eastern regions of Spain.
