Valencia-based supermarket chain Mercadona has posted a 35% increase in turnover to €4.51bn (US$3.9bn), year on year.


Profit meanwhile reached €70m for the full year. During the year, Mercadona opened 101 new outlets across Spain and its workforce increased by 6,200 people to 27,400.


Moving into 2002, Mercadona expects to report a €5.41bn turnover for this year, during which it will invest €300m in the opening of 100 supermarkets, mainly in the regions of Andalusia and Catalonia. These openings will create 4,000 jobs.


Company president, Juan Roig, added that Mercadona plans to open supermarkets in Portugal by 2004.
