Spanish dairy farmers in the Navarre region are reportedly protesting against French food group Danone’s plan to cut the price it pays for milk by €0.034 per litre.

Danone intends to reduce the price it pays to Navarre farmers to an average of €0.227 per litre of milk. Around 110 dairy farms in the Navarre region sell their milk, totalling 90,000 litres per day, to Danone.

The Navarre farmers have begun demonstrations, backed by Spanish agricultural trade unions UAGN and EHNE.

In a letter to Danone, farmers refused to continue producing milk for Danone at prices lower than they were at the end of 2002, reported the Spanish News Digest.
