France’s Monoprix, which is jointly-owned by Casino and Galeries Lafayette, has opened its first store in Syria.

The opening comes within the framework of a franchise agreement with Lebanese retailing group ADMIC.

Located in the capital, Damascus, it will be followed by a second store in Aleppo, which is due to open at the end of the month.

ADMIC already holds the franchise for Monoprix, Galeries Lafayette and its subsidiary, BHV’s stores in Lebanon and the United Arab Emirates. Its co-operation with Monoprix could also be extended to Jordan.

Syria is the latest market targeted by Monoprix as it pursues an international expansion strategy which, via des partnership agreements, also encompasses Tunisia, Andorra and Mauritius. Next year, the French retailer is planning to open for business in Qatar, in association with the Ali Bin Ali group.
