Dairy farmers in the Kabale district have had to diversify their activities in a bid to cope with the fragile Ugandan milk market. The area produces over 1000 litres of milk every day, but as the domestic and export markets for unprocessed milk dried up, the industry has switched attention to the production of other dairy products such as ghee, cheese, and butter.

For Huntex industries this is opening up new opportunities, with the production of high quality cheese, ice cream and yoghurt. Managing director Vincent Hunter explained that the company now plans to mechanise the production of its most popular cheeses, which include Gooder, Cahder and Garlic.

Huntex, which was established in 1992, also intends to expand into the Kisoro and Rukungiri districts and has applied for a loan from the Uganda Development Bank.
