MAFF is producing a set of advisory leaflets for farmers concerned about animal welfare problems during the foot and mouth disease outbreak.

The first leaflets, on the welfare of both dairy and beef cattle, pigs and sheep are now available and give advice on a number of issues, including nutrition and prevention of overstocking.

Copies of the leaflets can be obtained from your local Animal Health Office or MAFF’s Foot and Mouth Disease website at www.maff.gov.uk/animalh/diseases/fmd/default.htm.

Alternatively, you can request them from MAFF’s FMD helpline (0845 0504141). Copies have also been distributed to the National Farmers Union and the National Pig Association. Further leaflets giving specific welfare advice on poultry, goats and deer will be available in the coming week.
