Arla Foods has today (22 May) revealed plans to close its dairy and distribution facility in the UK city of Manchester.

“If the closure goes ahead it won’t result in a drop in production,” a spokesperson for Arla UK told just-food. “All raw milk processing operations will be transferred to facilities in Ashby, Stoiurton and Hatfield Peverel.”

The closure, to be completed in January 2009, is subject to a consultation process that is now underway. The move is likely to result in the loss of around 300 jobs, the company said.

“Our proposal is based on the thorough review of our production and distribution facilities that we have carried out in-line with our strategy of improving our performance in standard milk,” Lars Dalsgaard, business group director of Arla’s supply chain, said.
