Asda’s chief executive Andy Bond plans to host a sustainability conference later in the year for UK supermarket retailers to share expertise on packaging and renewable energy, the UK-based Wal-Mart subsidiary has indicated.

He presented plans for the conference to food analysts today (30 August) in London, and will be inviting fellow industry peers to the event, including representatives from Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons.

Tesco has been running a high-profile green campaign recently, which came to a head earlier this month when the retailer offered Clubcard points for ‘green’ customers who opt not to use plastic carrier bags to carry shopping home.

The campaign resulted in the issuance of over one million green Clubcard points in the first three days it ran, as shoppers used wheeled shopping bags, handbags and plastic crates instead.
