Supermarket chain Asda told just-food today (3 July) that it is considering the possibility of extending the fairtrade scheme, guaranteeing minimum income, employment and environmental standards, to UK food producers.

The UK unit of Wal-Mart has contacted the Fairtrade Foundation, the organisation that oversees the scheme in the UK, for advice on whether its principles could be applied to UK produce.
“We’ve had a conversation with the Fairtrade Federation. It hasn’t gone any further than that, but it’s something we are looking into,” a spokesperson for the supermarket giant said. “At the moment the Fairtrade label is only available to producers in the southern hemisphere. We work a lot with local and regional producers, so it could be a valuable tool to ensure certain minimum standards here too.”
