The Food and Drink Federation (FDF) today published a report setting out what ‘sustainability’ means to the food and drink manufacturing industry.
In addressing some of the many challenges the industry faces, the report was described as “an excellent contribution to the preparation for the World Summit for Sustainable Development” by the United Nations Environment Programme.
It is designed to:
*show, with examples, how the industry is addressing the Government’s four key sustainable development objectives (social progress, environmental protection, conserving natural resources, and stable economic growth);
*identify some of the many challenges facing the industry (consumer desire for ‘purer’ food, endocrine disruption, GMOs, sustainable agriculture, transportation); and

FDF Director General Sylvia Jay said: “Our industry takes its responsibility for the environment very seriously. Sustainable development is more than adopting a few ‘green’ initiatives.
“It’s about looking at the impact of industry on society, the economy and the environment; maximising the positive and minimising the negative. We believe it should be a process of continuous improvement, using innovative ways to increase eco-efficiency.
“Our next step will be to develop a series of Key Performance Indicators so that we can measure progress. We plan to consult as many people as possible and will publish the incentives in a final report, in time for the United Nations World Summit on Sustainable Development, Johannesburg, August 2002.”
