Today, IGD, the food and grocery industry supply chain research body, is co-ordinating
the creation of a fund to help farmers who are suffering as a result of the Foot
& Mouth crisis. The UK’s leading food and grocery retailers have already agreed
to contribute.

The fund has four key purposes:
1. To assist with the immediate relief for farmers by channelling a contribution
to suitable voluntary charities via the NFU, the NFU Scotland and allied bodies

2. To help to rebuild agricultural businesses as the movement restrictions ease
3. To make a contribution towards securing the long term security of UK farming
4. To get British produce back on the shelves

The initial estimated contribution is believed to be in excess of £2
million.
