UK retail giant Tesco announced yesterday [Wednesday] that it is preparing to slash the price of organic milk in-store by up to 6p, and simultaneously prompted fears for the future of the country’s organic farmers.

The Organic Milk Suppliers Co-operative, which controls the production of about 75% of the UK’s organic milk, insisted that if the price cut leads to lower farm gate prices, some farmers could be forced out of business.

Tesco meanwhile said that it hoped the reduction would boost sales of organic milk, and therefore put an end to the country’s surplus.
