For the first time since the issue emerged, the number of British consumers who will happily eat GM foodstuffs outnumbers those who refuse to, according to the results of a new poll by NOP.

44% of people will still turn down a product with genetically modified ingredients; however this is down 6% on those who responded to a similar survey conducted last year. Conversely, the number of people who will eat GM food is up by 2%, to 48%.

However, the poll also found that 20% of consumers believe that GM foods are significantly less safe to eat than their conventional counterparts.
