Just a few hundred of UK retailer Safeway’s 93,000 employees will be awarded a Christmas bonus this year.

The group has failed to achieve internal performance targets, reported the Times. As a result, only store managers and staff in charge of fresh food departments who have met individual store targets stand to gain a bonus at all, and this will be more modest than they had hoped for as overall company performance dictates an element of the bonus.

More junior staff in stores which have met targets are likely to feel the most cheated. The Bonus for Everyone scheme was introduced just two years ago, awarding staff bonuses if individual store and company-wide targets are met.

Jim White, human resources director, said: “We have got rules. which are clearly communicated. When the going is good, and when the going is tough, we stick to those rules. Everyone’s bonus has been impacted, including mine.”
