The latest UK grocery market shares from TNS Worldpanel indicate that the battle for second place behind Tesco is hotting up, with Sainsbury gaining ground on Asda.

The latest TNS Worldpanel rankings for the 12 weeks ending 21 May 2006, show Asda still holding on to second place with a 16.4% share.  Asda’s year-on-year growth rate was put at 4%.

However, Sainsbury’s recovery is continuing with its year-on-year growth rate remaining at a healthy 5%, lifting its market share from 15.8% to 16.0%.

Nevertheless, both retailers have a challenge to catch up with market leader Tesco which continued to grow ahead of the market, thereby increasing its share to another record high of 31.1%.
