Sainsbury’s and Morrisons have both increased their share of UK grocery sales but Asda has seen its market share dip, according to the latest data from Kantar Worldpanel.

The UK grocery market grew by 3.3% during the 12 weeks to 16 May, Kantar said today (25 May) as low inflation dampened growth in the sector.

Sainsbury’s, the UK’s third-largest grocer, and Morrisons, the fourth largest, saw their sales grow ahead of the market, which lead to both retailers increasing their share of sales.

Sainsbury’s sales rose 4.4%, taking its share of the market to 16.3%, up from 16.1% a year earlier.

Morrisons’ sales climbed 6%, meaning its share stood at 11.8%, up from 11.5% a year ago.

However, Asda, which last week admitted its performance in the first quarter of 2010 had been “disappointing”, saw its share of the market slip from 16.9% to 16.8% after its sales rose 2.5%.

Tesco, the UK’s largest grocer, grew sales by 3.4%, which left its share of the market static at 30.6%.

Kantar communications director Ed Garner said he expected Asda’s new chief executive Andy Clarke to focus on “restoring the clarity of Every Day Low Prices as well as reviewing the implementation of range rationalisation”.

Garner said: “Asda has already named these areas as a key priority going forward as shown by the launch of the Asda Price Guarantee and it will be interesting to see the results of the new strategy in the coming months.”
