UK supermarket giant Sainsbury’s is to extend the number of trial link ups with high street pharmacy Boots the Chemist from six sites to nine, and is rumoured to be eying a takeover offer for the group.
The trial outlets involve Boots constructing concessions within Sainsbury’s stores.
According to comment in the Sunday Times newspaper, however, the in-store experiments could be a forerunner for a takeover bid. Insiders are reported to have told the paper that Sainsbury’s CEO Sir Peter Davis has long coveted the chemist as part of a larger diversification strategy for the grocer.
