UK supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is to sell kiwifruit grown in the UK next year, in what will be the first time a UK-grown version of the fruit has gone on sale here.

According to The Grocer, new plant cultivars that can withstand lower temperatures, and specialist growing techniques, will allow the fruit to be grown in the UK. It is usually grown in warmer climes, such as in New Zealand, California, Italy, Greece and Chile.

“New technology, and our growers’ expertise, are combining to create crops in the English countryside which would have unthinkable just five years ago,” Sainsbury’s fresh produce buyer, Christian Hickey, told The Grocer.
