Scientists have predicted that a further 32 people will die this year from variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, the human form of BSE or mad cow disease. The number of people in the UK expected to suffer the disease is predicted to increase by about 20% per year.


According to the Edinburgh-based National Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease Surveillance Unit, 114 cases had been identified in Britain by the beginning of this year. CJD causes a rapid, progressive dementia and associated neuromuscular disturbances.
