The UK’s Office of Fair Trading today (Wednesday) referred the acquisition by supermarket chain Somerfield of 114 stores from Wm Morrison Supermarkets to the Competition Commission.

“We identified 22 mid-range stores and one one-stop store which raise possible competition concerns, using the Competition Commission’s methodology,” said executive director Penny Boys. “In light of this, the OFT considers that it is appropriate for the commission to undertake a detailed investigation of the transaction.”
