It’s likely to be a case of French bread sticks at dusk this evening, as supermarket sector giants Tesco and Sainsbury launch their summer parties simultaneously on either side of the River Thames.


Sainsbury apparently handed out the invites first, to its do at the London Aquarium, and the company stressed to the Telegraph that “no-one’s replied saying that they’re going to Tesco’s instead”. That could be down to the promise of celebrity chef Jamie Oliver’s attendance and plenty of Sainsbury’s champagne.


Over the water at Westminster Pier, Tesco with be partying on a moored boat with nibbles from its Finest food range.
