UK confectioner Tangerine Confectionery has announced plans to shut down a plant in Blackpool.

Tangerine said in December it was looking to create a “leaner” manufacturing network.

If the proposal goes ahead, the Clifton Road site is scheduled to close by the end of March next year. Up to 166 staff could be affected.

Production and equipment will be transferred to other sites including a second facility in the seaside town on Vicarage Lane, the company said yesterday (6 March).

The announcement comes as part of a “UK-wide reshaping of its manufacturing capabilities”, the company said. “Today’s announcement comes as the result of a strategic review which has found excess capacity across Tangerine’s manufacturing locations

Nigel Nelson, operations and supply chain director, added: “These changes at Tangerine are fundamental to creating sustainable jobs in Blackpool and elsewhere in our UK factories and underpin our future competitiveness as a British confectionery manufacturer.

“The decision has been made after a carefully considered review. Our primary concern at this stage is the welfare of our employees and we are committed to do all that we can to support them through the consultation period and beyond. We will do everything possible during this time to retain the experience of employees within the business by offering roles at our other factories for example, Vicarage Lane where we continue to invest.”
