UK supermarket leader Tesco has launched a range of legal products online, under the tagline: Lawyers can be expensive – why not see if you can handle the problem yourself?

Tesco.com is an advanced online shopping service, and this latest addition offers shoppers the chance to purchase documents such as do-it-yourself wills, rental agreements and a number of legal advice handbooks. Visitors can also search for lawyers in their neighbourhood and buy various services, such as will storage, from legal services provider Lawpack.

The Law Society’s chief executive Janet Paraskeva welcomed the innovative new service inasmuch as it would help shoppers to complete the most basic legal tasks. However, Bruce Ritchie, director of professional practice at the Law Society of Scotland, expressed concerns about consumer-led companies providing legal advice. He said the Society was extremely worried about issues regarding the independence of advice and potential conflict of interest, reported the Scotsman.
