Anglo-Dutch consumer goods giant Unilever is to defend itself against the current wave of criticism being levelled at the UK food industry with a social responsibility drive.

The company plans to introduce freezer units that are more eco-friendly, using up to 15% less energy than its previous models, reported Marketing. The freezers are used by Unilever to stock retailers across the UK with its Wall’s ice cream.

The company also plans to include in its advertisements a message aimed at encouraging people to eat more healthily.

Last month, chairman of Unilever Bestfoods, Gavin Neath, admitted Unilever’s food labelling could be improved and levels of sugar, fat and salt in its products could be reduced, Marketing said.
