UK union Unite has launched a campaign to save 300 jobs at the Wisbech production facility operated by Marfrig’s Moy Park business.

Moy Park plans to cut production at the site to focus on its ready-meals business, which operates out of Grantham. The company therefore plans to reduce the number of jobs at the facility by 307, retaining only 40 positions at Wisbech to operate its sliced meats line.

Employees impacted by the cuts have been offered the opportunity to transfer their jobs to Grantham or a third plant in Sleaford.

Unite regional officer Mark Plumb said the offer was “completely unrealistic” for most employees.

“We believe that there is no need for any job losses at Moy Park, which is a profitable company, if it brought more work to Wisbech and developed business synergies across all its operations,” he insisted.

“The workforce at the long established Moy Park site is loyal, hard working and flexible – and Unite will be making the case during the 90-day consultation process to keep these jobs in Wisbech.”

Moy Park was not immediately available for further comment.
