Asda, the UK subsidiary of US grocery giant Wal-Mart, is being sued by a local council for claiming that mangoes can help cure cancer.

The label in question read: “Mangos are a great source of Vitamin C and beta-carotenes which are good for healthy eyes and skin. Their antioxidant properties help to fight cancer.”

Prosecutor Phil Wirth stated that current legislation prohibits claims that a food has a property of curing cancer or fighting cancer or helping cure cancer, reported the local press in Swindon.

Swindon Council has been given permission from the Attorney General for this prosecution.
