The Women’s Institute has joined forces with environmental advocacy group Friends of the Earth to lobby the UK Office of Fair Trading to renew its investigations into competitive practices in the supermarket sector.
The two organisations allege that the “dominant supermarket corporations” are damaging both farmers and independent retailers, according to a report in the Daily Telegraph. Their campaign is also backed by the Association of Convenience Stores and Farm, an alliance of farmers.
The move was timed to coincide with the announcement of Tesco’s latest trading figures. The UK’s largest retailer yesterday [Thursday] reported third quarter sales up 12% as all parts of the business performed well.
