The US has appealed to the WTO to step in over the EU’s ban on imports of chemically treated poultry, which effectively blocks most US chicken from sale in the market.
Washington has formally requested a WTO disputes panel adjudicate the long-running row, arguing that the EU is breaking its free-trade obligations by blocking imports of poultry carcasses treated with chlorine dioxide, acidified sodium chlorite, trisodium phosphate and peroxyacids.
For such a ban to stand at the WTO, Europe must prove it is based on health concerns relying on good objective science – the US will claim Brussels’ actions lack “a scientific basis”.
