United Natural Foods, the US organic food distributor, posted an increase in profit for the first nine months of the year today (9 September), boosted by the expansion and integration of its speciality business.


Net income for the period to 2 May reached US$43.6m from $35.6m in the previous year.


Net sales also increased, reaching $2.6bn, up from $1.99bn in the comparable period of 2008. Operating income jumped to $81.3m from $68.6m in the prior year.


The company confirmed its net sales guidance for fiscal 2009 of $3.45bn to $3.50bn, representing a 2.5% to 4% increase in total net sales over fiscal 2008.
