A blast at a refinery operated by Imperial Sugar in the US state of Georgia has reportedly left dozens injured.
According to a Bloomberg report, the local fire department said 42 people had been injured, many of them critically. There had been around 100 workers on the site at the time of the blast, and as many as six are reported to remain unaccounted for.
Imperial Sugar said that a number of workers and contractors had been injured in the blast but no details of the type and gravity of the injuries were available. The injured had been taken to local hospitals, the company said.
“We are all concerned for the welfare of our associates and our thoughts and prayers are with them and their families this evening,” said Imperial president and CEO John Sheptor. “We are grateful for the superb response by the local emergency agencies to this tragic event.”
The extent of the damage to the refinery and the length of time it is expected to be closed is not known but Imperial said it would be providing more information as it becomes available.
Imperial Sugar produces refined sugar for food manufacturers, retail grocers and foodservice distributors, and markets the Imperial, Dixie Crystals and Holly brands.
