The US Food and Drug Administration has scheduled a public hearing to examine the rules governing functional food claims. The hearing has been set for 5 December.

The FDA said that it was “confident” that existing rules were adequate to govern this burgeoning market, but has organised the public hearing on the issue partially in response to a petition previously filed by the Centre for Science in the Public Interest.

“We believe that it would be in the best interest of public health to begin a dialogue with industry, consumers and other stakeholders regarding the regulation of these products,” the FDA said.

There is currently no official definition of “functional food”.
