Georgia-based bakery group Flowers Foods has completed its acquisition of Derst Baking Company, a small family-owned bakery company also based in Georgia.

The deal, which closed on 18 February, was structured as a merger between Derst Baking Company, which has annual sales of around US$50m, and a subsidiary of Flowers Foods. Derst will now operate as a part of Flowers Foods Bakeries Group, trading as Derst Baking Company, LLC.

Based in Thomasville, Georgia, Flower Foods operates 36 bakeries and has an annual turnover in excess of $1.7bn. It sells packaged bakery products to both the retail and foodservice markets across the Southeastern, Southwestern and mid-Atlantic states. Among its main brands are Nature’s Own, Cobblestone Mill, Sunbeam, BlueBird and Mrs Freshley’s.
