US foodservice distribution giant US Foods is to acquire California-based meat manufacturer FirstClass Foods.

FirstClass Foods processes red meat, poultry and seafood products. It generates annual sales of almost US$55m, US Foods said.

“US Foods has worked with FirstClass Foods for years and we’ve experienced the company’s commitment to high-quality products and consistency. “This acquisition will allow us to expand our center of the plate offering and better serve our customers throughout southern California,” David Norton, the president of the distributor’s meat arm US Foods Stock Yards.

US Foods said it will retain FirstClass Foods’ 50,000 square foot facility in Hawthorne in California. The company said it “expects to welcome its more than 100 employees to the company”.

Financial details were not disclosed. The transaction is expected to close by the end of the month.

In October, US Foods agreed to acquire Save On Seafood, a Florida-based seafood processor and distributor.
