Ralcorp Holdings has acquired Italian private-label frozen ready meals maker Gelit for an undisclosed sum.

Gelit, based in Cisterna di Latina, employs around 130 staff and produces frozen ready meals for sale in the US and Italy. The business will operate as part of Ralcorp’s American Italian Pasta Company division.

This is the second acquisition for Ralcorp in the last two months. In May, the group acquired US private-label cookie producer Petri Baking Products Inc.

The private-label industry has seen an increasing amount of consolidation in recent years. ConAgra Foods, previously a completely branded goods player, has made a steady move into the private-label arena through a number of acquisitions. US private-label firm TreeHouse Foods has also made clear its intent to expand in the sector when it acquired privately-owned dressings and sauces firm Naturally Fresh in March for $25m.
